A hand pump is a mechanical device that has been in use for centuries, playing a significant role in various aspects of human life. It is a manually operated pump, relying on human effort to function, and is known for its simplicity, reliability, and wide - ranging applications.
At its core, a hand pump consists of a few essential components. There is a cylinder, which serves as the main body where the fluid (usually water or air) is drawn in and pushed out. Inside the cylinder, a piston moves up and down. The piston is typically sealed within the cylinder to prevent leakage of the fluid during the pumping process. Connected to the piston is a handle or lever, which is the part that a person grips and operates.
One of the most common applications of hand pumps is in the extraction of water. In rural areas or in situations where there is no access to a powered water supply system, hand pumps are a lifeline. They are often installed over wells. When the handle of the hand pump is moved up and down, the piston inside the cylinder creates a pressure differential. As the piston moves upward, it creates a low - pressure area within the cylinder, causing water to be drawn into the pump from the well through an inlet valve. When the piston moves downward, the water is pushed out through an outlet valve and into a pipe or container for use.
